danig: (KCRF 2010)
It’s the busy time of year where I don’t make time to update LJ. I need to, for myself mostly. I do use it as a personal life archive as much as anything.
Let’s see. Since July:

  • Claire started 7th grade. She made the A volleyball team and is really enjoying it. They lost their first match but played well. She's still in the TAG program and was invited to take the ACT as a 7th grader--pretty cool. She was featured in a front-page article in the local paper http://www.bonnersprings.com/news/2013/sep/04/bonner-seventh-grader-moonlights-stilt-walker/ .

  • Kenzie is learning important life lessons related to roommates and will be moving out of her rental house this month, back to her Dad’s for a while, then is talking about moving to Lawrence with a male friend. We’ll see how that plays out. She’s dealing with loneliness that comes from changing social circles and growing up. Generally she’s okay and I’m doing a much better job of staying out of her business, listening without offering advice, and letting her learn her lessons. She turned 21 and is working at Danny’s bar and grill at the Legends.

  • Matt has his own show this year at KCRF and is going GREAT things. I’m so excited for him there are no words. As a result of his show he’s already been asked to quote a show in NE this winter!

  • I’m working with T’Ger again this year. I love, love, love that gig and am so glad he has me back each year. I’m also serving at the Bawdy Beer Show (formerly the Smoker) and it’s as fun as always. This has been the toughest opening two weekends in a long time. The heat has been horrible. But we've survived and it will get better from here on out!

  • Work is … it got rough for a while. I was supporting 8 people/teams and was running into the wall on a daily basis. After losing 6.5 days to non-stop data entry and watching my regular workload pile up I put my foot down and told my boss I am never doing that again. I put together a proposal asking him to define my job and make the salary match. I have my mid-year review Friday and he is to talk with one of my other supervisors/Exec Dirs this week as they travel together, so I’m looking forward to resolution. Not counting on more money but a clear job description that is communicated to the team will be very helpful. We have a new CMO starting the first of next month so we’ll have a bit of adjustment added to the revolving door that is the marketing department at Applebee’s.

  • 4-H is still there. We made it through the unnecessary drama of the fair. The extension agent (the county wide leader) is retiring at the end of the year. I’m hopeful that will bring positive changes.

  • I’m still going to the gym and feeling good about the progress I’m making in terms of toning and my shape and my abilities to lift. My pants are all getting too big again, which is a good thing because my mid-section is one of my struggle points. I’m frustrated that the scale will. Not. Move. But I just keep doing my best. I didn’t go last week because of the 3 day faire weekend and its toll on me. Will go tonight for a short bit because at 99 degrees and no A/C I won’t last long.

  • Matt is going to the gym regularly, too, and it’s REALLY showing. He’s down 25 lbs or so and looks ah-maz-ing. He’s also still working with the roller derby.

That’s the basic state of the Dani. Busy busy but that’s how it is. I sometimes just hang for the ride.

I found out last night that one of the moms from our 4-H Club died last Friday.
She was 42 years old and leaves a 16 year old daughter and a 13 year old son.
She told me in September that she was dealing with some health issues and that it was cancer, but that's all she shared and I respected her desire for privacy.

Tonight we went to her visitation. Her husband tells me that it took 11 months for the cancer to take her.

It really hit me for some reason. I guess because she was not much older than me. Making me think about my own mortality.

But in better news, teenager has a new job! She's working the breakfast through lunch shift this weekend at Past Times Bar & Grill in Basehor. She starts at $2.75/hr plus tips. Brings back lots of memories of my first job at Pizza Hut 22 years ago--$2.01/hr... I'm hoping she'll do well. I really am. She will because we told her she can't use the Christmas phone until she has a job. Now we have to define "have a job" so we can tell her when she can have the phone. Being precise is exhausting.

Hug those you love a little tighter tonight. Life is too short.

feel free to skip. Just thinking on paper. )

Some days being a parent isn't worth it.

We went to oldest kid's last choir concert last night. Kenz is a freshman in the concert choir and in Project X--a 16 member, hand-picked, invitation only ensemble. They're amazing. She's already been invited to join the Women's Ensemble and the A Capella choir next year along with Project X.

She also competed in league, regional and state solo/small ensemble competitions and received Is and IIs. She was selected as one of 40 for the KS All State Choir.

My freshman was one of only 5 to receive their varsity letter in choir!!!

I'm very proud of her!

And if any of my theater friends have recommendations for a) voice coaches or b) local theatre she can be involved in, please let me know. She's looking for things to do this summer.

danig: (Oh no you didn't)
This damn sewing project will...not...end. Thank God I married a man who can sew. And thank my husband for a) putting up with me and this project and b) helping the last two nights.

I apparently underestimated the amount of time it would take to make these six stupid orphan costumes. Well, not so much the amount of time to make them, but I didn't allow for so much time ripping or for finding ways to get it done in an already busy life.

*sigh* GRRRRRR )

Curtain rises at 7:30 tomorrow night and we'll be there. I'm excited to see Kenzie in her part. She's had lots of fun with this.

In other news:
~Kenzie now has a "thing" for a senior who's playing Daddy Warbucks in the musical. Dumb me--I asked a couple of weeks ago if she liked him and was assured she didn't. He's dropped her off at the house a few times and picked her up to take to rehearsal Monday when they were out of school. (against my own rule about letting her ride with a teenage driver.) Now I find out she's interested in him. *Smacks own forehead* NOT gonna happen.

~Her knee is almost back to normal. Guess she just needed a doctor to tell her she was okay.

~If she doesn't have 3 zeros assignments turned in by 5pm tomorrow she will be turning in her cheerleading uniform. Sad but true.

~Claire is in the top reading and top math groups in her kindergarten class. The teacher sent home a packet of 1st grade math for her to do for "fun" and she loves to sit down and do page after page. She's got basic addition and subtraction down. She loves to read and it's making us crazy cuz she wants to read and spell everything--and I mean everything.

~I am not taking on ANY new projects until after Hawaii. Between my Home Interiors shows that are popping up out of the blue,4-H stuff, work and the holidays around the corner I need to focus on the family. No New Commitments (you heard it hear first, Matt).

~HAVE to clean the house. In-laws coming for Thanksgiving. Plus it's just yucky.

~Bought our airline tickets for our Hawaii vacation in February. Can we leave now???

That's it for today. We'll see if I get any sleep tonight and what tomorrow holds.
